about

I began writing this song in 1970 while living in Eastern Washington’s Palouse. It was a magical yet painful time; one I’ll never forget. Don’t know why it took me all these years to complete it, but somehow it survived. Reminds me of early British folk rock.

lyrics

LYRICS:
First time that I saw her,
Light was shining from her eyes.
Like a deep clear darkness,
Set into a teal blue sky.

And I ached to taste her skin and touch her hair
But I fell into a dream that wasn’t there

Oh she’s a lady,
A child, a pearl.
Pale in the snow-light, I saw her there
Everywhere

She knew her heart was fragile,
What’s here today might soon be gone.
So life’s her opera,
And she’ll sing, until the dawn

I was a fool and didn’t sing the song I heard
I played the part but couldn’t find the words

Oh she’s a lady,
A child, a pearl.
Like a singing lark ascending, in the sky,
Very high

Walkin’ back to a place,
Where the water meets the land.
My time still lingers on,
Leaving footprints in the sand.

I drift back to days from long ago once more
But the waves roll in and cover up the shore

Oh she’s a lady,
A child, a pearl.
Like day and night
In my sky…. good-bye

Life flows through me
Time goes nowhere
I see slowly
She’s still in me, still there
