about

DEAL WITH THE MOON: In Haruki Murakami’s novel “IQ84,” he explores a world where two moons signal an extraordinary alternate reality for his main characters – a place that looks normal enough, but is far from it.

I can’t even imagine having to deal with two moons! One is bad enough. I’ve always had the feeling that the moon, especially the full moon, is up to no good. I can’t really explain it, but usually things don’t go well for me during a full moon. Maybe it’s just superstition, but moonlight simply doesn’t feel right.

My song is influenced by Mose Allison’s simple, cool stylings, but also takes a musical cue or two from the soulful jazz organ groups of the 60s and 70s. – the foot pedal bass line and the understated rhythm guitar parts in particular. Ron Boustead’s man-sized vocal cooks to perfection here.

DEAL WITH THE MOON
Words & Music by Rob Bender
Published by Bender Creative Group, BMI copyright 2014

Well I got a dilemma
And I want it to knock off
But can’t get it to drop off
And it’s drivin’ me right off
I feel trapped by the full moon
I can’t dance to its blue tune
Been a change in the pressure
Old man moon’s an aggressor

I gotta deal with the moon
It keeps me up all night
I gotta deal with the moon
Something’s just not right

You know my girlfriend left me
Was trampled by a mob
And the moon was still full
When I done lost my job

Everywhere there’s entwined in pale moonlight
I hear laughter from the shadows, and it’s just not right
I know I might sound crazy, but I don’t go out
There’s a spell on me, can’t get past my doubt

I gotta deal with the moon
That’s the name of the tune
I gotta deal with the moon
Not a minute too soon

Gotta deal with the moon
Yeah make no mistake
Gotta deal with the moon
Gotta put on the brakes

Everywhere there’s entwined in pale moonlight
I hear laughter from the shadows, and it’s just not right
I know I might sound crazy, but I don’t go out
There’s a spell on me, can’t get past my doubt

(Why oh why)

Well I’m singing a b-bop
But it feels like the d-bop
Cause my soul thinks it’s re-bop
But my brain’s doin’ hip-hop

I gotta deal with the moon
All night long
I gotta deal with the moon
Gotta sing my song

Such a mean old moon
Comin’ out too soon
Trapped all night long
Something just feels wrong

It’s a sliver aggressor
Yeah, just too much pressure
Yeah, gonna deal with the moon
Gotta deal with the moon
Gotta deal with the moon
